Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo gives the following update regarding the investigation into the actions of Police Chief Ron Schleuter: “Effective immediately, Police Chief Ron Schleuter has been demoted to the rank of Captain. The attorneys representing Schleuter in this investigation received notification of my decision early this morning. A hand delivered letter was given to Attorney Val Solomon (around 8:21 am this morning), and a faxed copy to Attorney Brian Crawford (around 9:30 am this morning). In the letter, Captain Schleuter has been notified to report to my office 9 am Tuesday, August 3, 2010 (tomorrow). Assistant Chief Herbert Otwell has been serving as Acting Chief of Police during this investigation. Otwell has been named Interim Chief of Police. Though no immediate time frame is in place to name a permanent Chief of Police, we will begin the process of opening the position up for applicants. It is time for us to move forward and begin the process of restoring internal and external public confidence in the leadership of our police department."
