Robert Canty said, "I was sleep and my daughter-in-law called me and said he had been shot.  This is something that's always in the back of your mind."

Robert Canty's 38 year-old son, Corporal Marchael Canty was gunned down in this parking lot at around 1:30 Monday morning.  Ruston police say Canty, a 12 year veteran of the Ruston police force was called to check out a suspicious car.

When Canty arrived and got out of his police cruiser, investigators say that's when the suspect opened fire.

Chief Rogers said, "He got out of his vehicle and was shot three times when he exited the patrol car. One in the right wrist area, in the upper chest and in the abdomen."

Chief Steve Rogers says medics arrived on the scene and Canty was later airlifted to LSU Shreveport.  His dad says as soon as he got the call he and many other family members rushed to see him.

Robert Canty said, "He's alert and the good part is, he'll be ok."

But the question is, will he return to the force?  According to his dad, that's a no brainier.

Robert Canty said, "I'm quite sure he's going back."
