Printing counterfeit checks seems to be an increasing trend these days.
Detective James Clark with the Monroe Police Department said, "We'll have a serge where we'll have a lot of checks come through the area."
Just this week, police busted this couple, Christopher Smith and Dusty Welch. Detectives say they used these homemade check that look legitimate to steal more than 11 hundred dollars. But, that's just it, because of today's technology counterfeit checks look real.
Clark said, "You'll see something that says make your own checks at home it's a check writing kit and you can buy the checks paper or the stock."
Investigators say this couple tried to cash these fake checks at Macs Fresh Market, the Super 1 in Monroe and West Monroe and 3 other places until they got lucky at the Brookshires in Monroe.
Clark said, "Call the company and ask. Did you issue this check to this person?
So the next time you receive a check that looks legitimate, police say, save yourself the grief and make the call to the bank or the account holder to make sure you're not caught up in the middle of a scheme!
