A veteran deputy who worked at the Morehouse Parish Jail resigns under fire after allegations that thousands of dollars were missing from a sheriff’s account.

Sheriff Mike Tubbs said that Lanie Davis, an administrative jailer, resigned Nov. 12 following an investigation that indicated that receipts and deposits from the commissary didn’t add up.

“Earlier this month, I was contacted by my chief civil deputy. There was a discrepancy in the correction division,” said Sheriff Tubbs. “The actual money that comes up missing, comes from the sheriff’s general fund.”

The sheriff says that money comes to the jail through the corrections divisions, and that Davis, a 14-year-veteran with the sheriff’s office, was in charge of tracking money sent by inmates’ family and friends. An audit revealed that the receipts and deposits didn’t match up.

“This deputy was working at the jail, responsible for handling the accounts of money coming into the jail,” said the sheriff. “I called the deputy that handles the account, and she chose to resign.”

The incident is now under investigation by the district attorney and the legislative auditor, where criminal charges could be filed against Davis.

An audit is underway to determine the exact amount of money missing.

The sheriff has ordered Davis to pay the stolen money back.
